Escape Velocity

Rene's 50's Cafe

2 March 2013

I had a great enchilada lunch here while Catherine and Lee were skiing/snow boarding.

An ol' timer, wearing a Dallas Cowboys ball-cap  came in, sat near me, and had his lunch too. Rene, the owner, had a conversation with him that turned on the new doctor in Las Vegas.  Rene and the cowboy had been using the same doctor, so Rene was interested in the new one.

Red (or Rojo) and older, ol' timer showed up and sat with the cowboy.  The cowboy told Rojo that he was surprised that Rojo didn't get a Royal Crown when he, Rojo, ordered ice tea.  The cowboy was having lemon aid.

Rojo wanted to know if the cowboy had ever eaten at the Hillcrest Cafe in Las Vegas.  Rojo proclaimed their steaks the best in the world and that he, Rojo, takes his girl friend there.

Rojo and the cowboy discussed the Sheriff and decided they haven't seen a worse one:

One New Mexico sheriff faces criminal charges after the Attorney General's office said he asked a deputy to lie on a police report.
Mora County Sheriff Thomas Garza knew he was being investigated for a recorded fight with one of his deputies back in April. What he didn't seem to know is that he was criminally charged this week for allegedly falsifying police records.
Attorney General Gary King told Target 7 his office charged Garza with one count each of tampering with public records and criminal solicitation. The alleged crimes were uncovered while investigators looked into Garza for the original complaint.

While the fight did not lead to charges, investigators said they realized Garza had allegedly asked a deputy to lie on an unrelated police report. The deputy complied, citing fear over losing his job.
When Target 7 showed up to the Sheriff's Office, Garza seemed to have no idea what charges Target 7 was asking about. He then said "no comment" and referred Target 7 to his attorney.
He has not been arrested, but will be arraigned in the coming days.

Rojo wanted to know if the cowboy still had his horses.  Cowboy allowed the did - three- that he didn't ride them and that horses are just pets that'll empty your pocket book.  Rojo agreed that horses eat a lot and that the price of alfalfa was way too high.  Rojo too has horses and he doesn't ride either.

Rojo wanted to know if the cowboy still had his hired hand and the cowboy said, "No. All he wanted to do was drink".  Rojo stated that he had just attended the funeral of the 37 year-old drunk driver who was recently killed. "That's all they do here - drink and drive."

Rojo wanted to know if the cowboy still went to the senior center.  Rojo stated that he did, but some times you don't know what you're eating there.

Rojo related that after WWII he's worked in Seattle and that he'd made good money as an Iron Worker.  He'd also worked in Denver before retiring to Mora Valley.

Rojo asked the cowboy if he'd been following the Mora girls' basketball team:

Congratulations to the Mora Rangerettes on bringing home the Championship from the 10th Annual Lady Lion Classic, the Northern Rio Grande Tournament, Regular season and District Tournament Chapions and a semi-final showing in the State Championships. Great job on a successful season!!!

The cowboy said he hadn't.  The waitress said she hadn't either.  Rojo admitted that he had never been to a game.

Rojo wanted to know if the cowboy still went to the VFW. The cowboy said no, not since they'd elected the new post commander, who he didn't care for.  Neither did Rojo. Rojo was as WWII vet who landed in Normandy with "the Texans" and the cowboy was a Korean War vet.

Quite an entertaining lunch!
